Are Airedals Supposed to be Smart?

Thats what the breeder told us, and the same with other owners of airedales. Wiggum is an airedale and hes dumber than a post. Hews 5, btw, we also met his brother and his owner (hes one year older than Wiggum), and they said he was dumb to.

I don't get it, all we heard is that their supposed to be tame and smart. Yet hes super hyper, barks alot, and is stupid.

  1. I'm an Airedale owner. Airedales are some of the smartest dogs I have ever met. However, they require expert training. They aren't incredibly food motivated. Also, they're so clever, that if you want them to do something, you have to give them a good reason why. If I tell my airedale to do something her first thought is "why?" I give her a good enough reason, she'll do it. No problem.

How many walks does he get? I walk my Airedale at least an hour a day. If she doesn't get that, she will be very hyper and barky and won't listen to a word I say. So maybe you have a stupid dog, or you just can't handle an Airedale.

  2. There not the top smartest dogs. But i guess any dog can be trained to do anything if the owner trains them well

  4. There are no stupid dogs, just stupid owners.

Take him to training classes and exercise him.

  5. Airedales are very smart! So smart, that they have minds of their own and can be rather stubborn. You just have to outsmart your dog to train him. I suggest hiring a professional dog trainer, one who has experience in training terriers.

  6. it all depends on how much you train him airdals can be very smart IF trained right

  7. Airedales in general are very smart.  They are terriers- 'smart' comes with the breed unless they are poorly bred.  But smart does NOT mean well-behaved.  In fact, often the opposite if the dog is not provided appropriate levels of exercise and mental stimulation.  Some of the worst-behaved dogs are actually some of the smartest, they are just bored.  Hyperactivity and barking are usually the result of a severely understimulated dog.  See about signing him up for some classes in something like Agility that requires him to think (or even basic obedience if you are still at that level).  I bet your dog is smart, you just need to give him an appropriate environment to display it in.
