Question:

Are All Blue eyed Cats Deaf?

We have a cat that is Siamese. She is just over a year and had her first and ONLY litter of kittens. She got out by accident. Anyways, we are not sure who the dad is, but there is one around our neighborhood that is Big and Gray and pretty fluffy. Anyways, she had 5. One is grey with a white mask and all the other 4 are completley white. Like snow white. There is no other color markings on them. Even the tiger strip that goes aross there cheeks, is an even whiter color. I heard yesterday that all cats born with blue eyes are deaf. Then I just heard that its only all white cats with blue eyes. Does any one know? And if they are deaf is it really that big of a handicap for them?

  1. NO..I have a snow white  long hair cat  and has blue  eyes  and no  he is not  deaf.........ALSO  SIAMESE kittens  are all born  white  with  blue  eyes  .... there  markings  change and their color  come a few  weeks after their  born.........chances are your all white  kittens  will color  will change as they  get a few  weeks old.........so no  not all white  cats  are not deaf...  some may be but not all........

  2. No that is entirely not true. I had and all white cat with blue eyes, and she heard fine till the day she died (poor Baby Blue!)! I have also seen lots of deaf cats, and yes, some were white with blue eyes, but there were also brow owns, and black ones, and gray ones, and red ones ETC! The color doesn't matter. That is kinda like saying all black people are mean, when really you don't know that (no offense blacks!).

  3. Pfft. No! The majority of white cats with blue eyes are deaf, but not all!

  4. Kittens have blue eyes until they get older, just like real babies, if they are very small then there bluer eyes are normal. The white ones will probably develop more color and simaese markings as they get older, I had a kitten that looked likea  grey tabby when she was born, from a siamese mom, but now that she is older, she is solid blue-grey with some white.

  5. not always - but 90% of the time, yes.  It also depends on the breed.

The deafness isn't a handicap for them, because they don't know what they are missing, so they deal with what they have.

  6. ALL kittens are born with blue eyes. But most change when they are around 8-10 weeks or so. I just got a 7 week old kitten yesterday, and he has blue eyes, but they look like they are changing to green or hazel.

WHITE cats with blue eyes have a high chance of being deaf, but it is not EVERY white cat with blue eyes. Only some. We have a white cat with blue eyes, and he can hear perfectly fine.

A lot of times, kittens are born pure white but then gain markings as the get older. The litter my kitten came from had two white, SNOW WHITE, kittens. By the time they were 5 weeks old, they had grey tails and grey masks, just like a siamese. If the mother is a siamese, I bet this will happen to the kittens.

Also, if a white cat has any markings (like the tiger stripes you were talking about), then their chances of being deaf are reduced, as well.

If they are deaf, it really isn't that big of a handicap. They will of adjusted to it. Don't worry about it. Im sure they will be perfectly fine.

  7. i don't know if that is true but if they are deaf, that is a big handicap for them. if they can't hear, they won't come to you or do anything you say. if they get out, they can easily die because cat's normally have sharp hearin and if they can't hear anything, animals can sneek up behind them and kill them

  8. I have 2 Siamese(mix) cats, both of them have blue eyes and perfect hearing!

  9. Not all but the majority are.   Deaf cats can make wonderful pets though.  It is highly advised to keep them indoors for obvious reasons.  You will find loving homes for them.

  10. No

  11. I don't think that white cats with blue eyes are always deaf. I have a kitten that has one blue eye and one gold, she isn't deaf, however,I have another kitten with hazel colored eyes who is deaf. Someone told me at the vets office that one in four white cats are deaf. I had never heard that before and we have had several cats through the years. I asked my Vet if it was really a big handicap for her and he said not really. We try not to sneak up on her and scare her, though. She is kinda skidish,if you know what I mean. I have four other cats, and she usually geta laong ok with them. She's very loveable also.

  12. Not all white cats with blue eyes are deaf. I know a cat and he is white with blue eyes and he can hear perfectly fine. Most of them are so you should probably keep them indoors to be safe. Cats with no hearing will cross roads and get hit by cars, not here a predator coming so they can defend themselves or flee. I would suggest taking them to the vet when they are old enough to leave their mother to have it checked.
