Are All Mythologies Protected by Copyright?

If some of them are not, which ones are? Also, can stories and characters in mythologies altered freely or does it requires permissions to do so? If permissions are required, who handles them legally? Thanks for your answers.

  2. Mythology is based on oral tradition.  So long as it remains oral it belongs to everyone.  Put another way the words are free but once they are written down they can be copyright protected by the author.

  4. Yes, I bought the copyrights to mermaids and vampires so anyone who asks how to become either of those things has to pay me royalties.  I sold the rights to UFOs to Bigfoot.

  5. mythologies should not be altered and should be copyrighted. the authorities who should handle them should be the government organizations responsible for cultures and arts

  6. Noup, they are free to change, they belong to the people, only if you create an special character based on one like that film the Mommy...
