Question:

Are American Eskimo Dogs socially acceptable for men?

First, I just want to say that I'm going to buy and love this dog regardless of what society thinks, I'm just curious of whether or not this dog (and any white fluffy dog for that matter) is considered awkward for a single man to get.

I'm thinking of getting an American Eskimo Dog, I just like something about them. However, I know the small cute fluffy white dogs are stereotypes of what women get. American Eskimo Dogs aren't really small, but they aren't very big (usually around 9-19 inches tall), and they tend to be white, fluffy, and very cute. Interestingly enough from what I've read they are good watchdogs, which I guess is considered "manly."

Here is a picture of typical American Eskimo Dogs:

Also, here is a foxy American Eskimo Dogs, which seem more "guy" appropriate due to it's color and resemblance of a fox:

I like both the white and foxy ones about equal, but I'm guessing the foxy ones are rare and harder to find.

  1. That is ridiculous of course they are

  2. I don't think the foxy American Eskimo Dog is really a purebred.  Did you get the dog picture from this website?

Her name is Foxy.  That dog is an American Eskimo Dog crossed with a Chow Chow (probably Golden Retriever too).  She's basically a mutt.

In the picture of the typical ones, I would say the shorter haircut (like the one featured on the middle dog) is masculine, while the longer hair on the dog on the far left is more feminine.  Otherwise, I wouldn't think you were foo foo frilly for having an American Eskimo Dog.

That's just the thing too... sometimes you can find a mutt that looks like the breed you want but has that extra unique touch that makes the dog perfect for you... both looks and personality-wise.  It doesn't hurt to browse the petfinder.com page for your area once in a while.

  3. I am of the opinion that a Real Man wouldn't care one way or another what other so-called men say.

The only reason other men even say anything is that they aren't comfortable with their own manhood and want everyone else to be as uncomfortable as they are.

Be yourself, man.  Do your own thing.  Be your own man.

  4. From your first statement...I would ask Why do you care????

  5. i know a guy who has a chihuahua and he's still really cool and popular. it doesn't matter what people think. it's your dog and you're the one who's going to love it and feed it and take care of it, it really doesn't matter what they think is socially acceptable.

by the way american eskimo dogs are very cute! so get one if you want one!

  6. A man who loves dogs, ANY dog is number one in my book. American Eskimos are beautiful dogs. I have a pure black pomeranian with the most luxuriant soft fur you ever felt. I LOVE pomeranians and their clever little ways and funny antics. I wish I had 10 more!!!

  7. I personally think any dog you want and care for is socially acceptable.  My husband is a full grown man that has a 4lb chihuahua.  He picked her out, he walks her, she is his dog.  He could care less what is socially acceptable, he loves his dog.

  8. From being a groomer, I've seen tons of dogs with their owners.

I see so many women with large strong dogs and so many men with tiny little dogs.

If you feel the Eskie is the breed for you, go for it!

The dog won't take away your manliness...unless you dyed it pink or dressed it up in little outfits, which I highly doubt will happen. :)

  9. American Eskimo's come in white, cream, white with bisquit. There are NO brown American Eskimo's. Your "foxxy" dog is some sort of a mixed breed.

Many men buy American Eskimo's. If you  haven't owned a dog, they are probably too smart for you. They become overly protective, & need socialization. Example: An American Eskimo may not let your mother-in-law into the house. A typical American Eskimo owned by a single female, may not allow any strange men to sit by her. I don't know if an American Eskimo would dislike any girlfriend you brought home. Probably. If you leave an American Eskimo in your car, windows/doors open. No one will be entering your car unless they eliminate the dog first. No one is going to come in your house, if you are not home. An American Eskimo can be well socialized & appear to love everyone. Leave you home for a few minutes with a visitor there. When you come back your visitor will tell you that the dog would not allow them to move. Even moving one finger caused the dog to growl. They are pretty little guard dogs in disguise.

  10. Your masculinity isn't determined by the breed of dog you own, so if you want an Eskie, but all means get one. The only acceptable colors in the breed are white and biscuit and cream. There is no "foxy" coloration or style and any breeder selling "rare" colors is one to be avoided.

  11. the dog doesn't really matter. haven't you ever seen those movies where there's a mafia boss with a chihuahua or a cat?? lol.
