Question:

Are Americans immoral?

Recently I went to study abroad in Italy in a small town. I was offended one night when us girls went out and was told by a couple of the Italian guys, that Americans were known to be promiscuous and easy. Of course I was offended because all Americans are not like this! However, he went on to say in American culture, it's normal for people to "hook up". He said to have s*x with an American you don't have to take the time to get to know them. But can still have sexual access to one's body. He said in American culture it prevalent to: have one night stands, you can have s*x without knowing and caring about a person even though there's more to them than s*x, it's normal to go to strip clubs ( looking at other ppl naked at strip clubs and getting aroused while in a relationship is not cheating, but if you so much as go on a date with someone else it's cheating), etc. He went on to say Americans can have at least 10 - 50+ sexual partners in a lifetime. All this he said was not normal in other cultures, and many of the Italians agreed. It's not a normal thing to have multiple s*x partners 20+, nor is it normal to not have a connection with someone before you are intimate with them. None of this is normal it's just something that has become normal in American culture because we made it that way because of a lack of morals.I was offended at first, but realized this had some truth to it. What do you guys think? Are Americans commonly stereotyped like this around the world? Is it just a stereotype or is this the truth about us as a culture? Are we promiscuous? Opinions please.

  1.      It seems that our culture is oftentimes confused with our television programming.  Or is it? Is the question.   I come from a somewhat conservative upbringing and I do not associate myself with the promiscuity of TV culture.  I do believe that the LACK of proper parenting  (teaching of the basics--morals and values) is in abundance since I was a kid in the 1980s.  Innocence is almost non-existent and that is frightening as a new mother and 30-something.

  2. some people are stupid to judge the whole country jus cuz of some people.

  3. A lot of this world wide view can be attributed to the TV and motion picture industries, I expect.

A lot of Europeans actually regard Americans as rather prudish.

  4. Since when was promiscuous synonymous with immoral?

I know plenty of perfectly nice people who know their way around the block.

Who's to define what "moral" is anyway. It's different, not only with each culture, but with each person.

  5. uuuuuumm, it goes both ways (HAHA!) cuz thats not all US about 75% is like what he said but this country was made from emmagrants from all over and maybe from Italy. Sooooooooo.... stereo ish type kinda i guess

  6. There's a lot of folks out there that claims to be Christian, but the only ones that are real Christians are the ones that's like Jesus and that's the Baptists and that's just the way it is.

  7. That def has some truth to it. All americans are not promiscuous....however just because you have safe s*x doesn't mean you are not promiscuous. Continually having wreckless one night stands is promiscuous. Think about it....you don't really know someone but you are being as intimate with them as people in marriages are with each other. You've experienced someone's body but will never see them again? That's crazy. Being promiscuous is indeed immoral. It doens't have to do with each culture's different set of morals. That's like saying one culture doesn't believe in morals, while another believes in honor killings. Murder is universally immoral for the most part. There are certain beliefs and practices that are deemed moral, because the majority of cultures in the world do not believe in them, and most world religions go against them. Most religions, speak out against promiscuity. So it's not a different sets of morals, it's a universally wrong to most of the world. of course most americans don't think this because we live in our own bubble. Think about it we are one of the only cultures that: celebrates strip clubs, p**n, one night stands, hooking up. all this is part of our every day culture we think it's normal to have numerous sexual partner when it REALITY IT'S NOT. It just in our culture because we created it that way. One night stands, strip clubs, p**n etc are immoral because they have no moral substance.

  8. I'm American but live in Italy.  Unfortunately, we have this reputation.  A lot of American girls (not all but a lot) go to Italy or abroad and have s*x with every Joe, d**k and Bob because they are far away from home and they want to go home and brag about how foreign guys "love" American women.  Not all American girls are like this, but I've met a lot that were. Also, although divorce exists in Italy it's know where near like that in the US.  For example, here you'll meet a lot of people that are on wife/husband number 1-2, in the States I have friends that are husband number 5 and they're barely in their thirties.  I don't know maybe foreigners see these things and think either Americans make lousy spouses or are promiscuos.  Who knows?  Yes, it's true not all Americans are like this, but unfortunately a lot are.

  9. i think that some are and some aren't, plus its different cultures. im 16 and american and a virgin, and i know ppl from other cultures around my age who are definitely not...its just the way ppl view us. every culture always wants to see others as beneath them for some reason and now alot of cultures are using americans as scapegoats.

  10. american morality has gone spiraling out of control.

ever since we chose to toss God, the bible, and even just common human decency out the window, we are now reaping what we sow.

it started with madonna making sexually provocative videos on MTV in the early 80's. when other female performers saw her getting rewarded with fame and fortune for acting like a ****, they began imitating her.

today, just about EVERY female singer dresses and acts like a w***e. it's no longer a matter of how talented they are or how good they can sing, it's how they look and how many guys they've slept with that makes them famous.

with all the britney spears, paris hiltons, shariras, carmen electras, lindsey lohans, and all other S****y performers pied pipering our young girls into thinking that harlotry is the key to happiness, wealth, and admiration.

plus, when young boys are instructed by their idols to be a player and "hooking up" with as many random strangers as they can before they die is their goal, is it really any wonder that we live in an oversexed culture?

  11. I don't think there's anything wrong with having many partners, as long as you're safe about it. If that's what someone wants to do, that's their choice.

  12. You Americans do that. That is true not just for some, but for majority of your populace. But immoral? I should think twice about saying that to Americans or any other race. Morality is culture-dependent. Based on culture, for Italians, for example, Americans sure are immoral. To an open-minded person, however, not necessarily so.

  13. I haven't been around the world but I'm sure that if America is, so is the whole world.

  14. Um too be nice for once for me yes americans are pretty much whores you guys sleep with random people and go to strip clubs regularly see where i come from that is UNACCEPTABLE see we would get beat if our momma found out about that stuff and you guys are stereotyped like that because a lot of people in america are like that and you all have anorexic and are all self absorbed.
