Question:

Are Appendix Horses good?

I have a chance to get a free Appendix horse. No, nothing is wrong with her, so don't ask about that. What I want to know is what is the best thing they are good at? Jumping, dressage, or just eventing in general. And are there any problems that occur in Appendix horses more often than any other horses? Like, Thoroughbreds and flighty(no offense to anyone that owns one, its just an example) Are Appendix horses like that? Or are they almost perfect. lol

  1. Hey There,

I own a quarter horse (foundation) stallion and several thoroughbred mares. Most of my life with breeding horses was breeding exceptional quarter horses and thoroughbreds and only rarely did I mix the two just because I focus on specific breeds of the two. Thoroughbred or Quarter Horse. Honestly I think horses in general have their own personalities and traits. I have met some of the absolutely worst horses and they were appendix horses. I have met some of the worst thoroughbreds, the list goes on and on and on. On the other hand I have met some of the best appendix horses, quarter horses, etc. I think a lot really depends on the horse, especially since you are not breeding to try and get a specific type of horse. What has she done? How old is she? Will she suit your needs? Thats what you need to know. A lot more is going to depend on her training if that makes any sense. I think appendix horses are a nice cross. If you want a quieter cross with the thoroughbred then go for something like a thoroughbred draft cross. Appendix horses can and will be flighty. But they can be nice too. I think you will find that the specific breed is very good with being athletic. I have not met too many of the cross that were horribly put together either. In general with the breed if you are lucky in the appendix horse you will get stamina, a great athlete, spunky, yet calm enough to actually handle the way you probably want to. Good luck!

  2. Appendix horses are very good a many things. They have to good common sense and calmness of a QH with the athleticism and cattiness of a TB. The appendix horse is often good at dressage and can be mistaken for a warmblood. They can also be good and jumping and eventing. You'll just have to find out what this particular horse is good at. It could be anything.

  3. I LOVE my Appendix! He will just go, go, go until I tell him to stop! He is lovely!

  4. Appendix horses can be a little flightier then quarter horses but not really most quarter horses now have thouroughbred blood in them I had an apendix and loved him he was very laid back These horses are great for jumping and cross country they have lots of stamina good luck with your new horse

  5. I have an appendix and he is wonderful. They are great jumpers and big sweethearts. Mine has been totally sound, you should go for it, it'll be fun, and good luck in the future
