  1. http://www.spaceweather.com/

This site tracks them and it also will send you alerts when you might be able to see them in your area.  You need to be pretty far north to see them but there are rare times when they can drift as far south as the middle USA

  2. the best place to see them is the north pole :]

  3. THey aren't predictable, as there is little intelligence of what atmosphere creates them

The best place to see them is Northern Canada.

Or if you want to see the Southern lights (aurora austrailis) try south chile or south austrailia

  4. The Aurora depends on solar activity, and can be predicted in a limited sense by the speed with which the solar wind travels from the Sun to the Earth. A solar flare is generally followed about two days later by increased auroral activity on Earth. Auroras are most frequent close to the North Magnetic Pole (also the South Magnetic Pole, but not too many people live there). We're currently close to solar minimum, so auroras are extremely rare. I live in central Ontario and haven't seen an aurora for at least a year. As solar activity picks up over the next couple of years, they will become more frequent. Right now, the activity is so low that I wouldn't waste my money of travelling to see aurora.
