Are Australians cheaters?

Question

Seriously, have a look at the medal tally. How does a country of 20 mill or so get to have as much medals as other far bigger countries? Its other one of two things; 1. They are cheating by somehow using illegal drugs in sports or 2. They are that ridiculously obsessed with sports that they spend millions of dollars on it, when i bet half of thier country lives in poverty. What do you reckon?

If the Olympic medal haul was solely determined by the population and wealth of the country, the Olympics would be even more repetitive and predictable than they already are.

Yeah nice try with the cheating conspiracy Luke but it's a well known fact that although we're not the biggest country we have always been very competitive in the Olympics...especially in any events that revolve around water. I guess that's what comes from living on the worlds largest island. We're also pretty d**n good in many team events too.  All this even though we have actually reduced our swimming budget for these games...I guess you can't keep a good country down.

But thank you for your comment...we appreciate the fact that we are so good people think we must be cheating. :-)

They are just so far superior at the sports they win, and that is because they train harder and meaner. I would add that there is far less poverty, as a percentage of population, in Australia than there is in the USA, so why according to one of your half baked fantasies, does the USA normally do so well ? I can also only recall one international Australian athlete ever having used drugs, and he was living and training in the USA at the time !

Using your logic the Jamican's must be cheating because they are so good at running, or the New Zealanders are cheating because they have an even smaller population than ours yet they won some medals in rowing?

Why is it with Americans that when they are beaten it's because the other sides are cheats?  We were beaten by Phelps in the swimming yet he is treated as a celebrity over here!  He is praised as much as some of our own athletes!  And I'm yet to hear a single Australian media outlet suggest he's a drug cheat..

We do spend a lot of money on sport, but still no where near as much as the US or even GB.  For instance our elite basketballers are definitely not paid $91m a season...even AFL players (which is our countries most prominent sport) would be lucky to be paid more than $100,000 (including sponsorship deals).

And our country is certainly not poverty stricken.  We have free medical care and affordable health insurance for those who want it.  Tertiary education (college) is subsidised by our government and a loan is granted to students which is interest fee and doesn't require repayment until a graduate is earning a certain amount of cash.  Our welfare system works for the most part, and compared to other countries we have a relatively low level of homelessness.

On the topic of drug cheats, try and name a couple of Australian's which have been proven...whilst I'm sure there's a very small minority I certainly can't think of any from the top of my head...the US however is another story...Marion Jones anyone?

Pure unadulterated TALENT.

It must really bother some country's knowing that a bunch of Aussies could kick your butts.  Australians are quite tough on drugs in sport, its a pity those other country's out there aren't.  There's ample evidence of american, asian and european drug cheats, so we don't mind when you complain about our natural talent outclassing your drug fuelled cheating.

Swimming.  So many more medals to award than most other sports because of all those four different strokes for each distance.

But they can't beat us.  Go USA!!!
