How did they get there? Have the always been there, or did someone introduce them?

  1. It is thought that Romans brought them over as pets though nothing has been proven. Certainly, they are not indigenous.


  2. They are not indigenous to Gibraltar but are thought to have crossed the strait from North Africa centuries ago with merchants or invaders. They are misnamed as apes, as they are tailless macaques, a species of monkey.
