A horse owner/friend told me not to worry but what can I say I need more than one answer to make me feel safe about letting a horse eat there.

  1. You don't need to worry about your horse eating Buttercups. They have a very unpalatable taste and horses rarely eat them!!

  2. yes they are! but i have no idea how to get rid of them... weed killer might work, but it would also kill the grass... so i dont know. but DO NOT let your horse eat there.

  3. I belive Buttercups are toxic to horses, I would keep them inside for the 2-1/2 weeks in a shed with acess to a outdoor pen( no buttercups).   and slowly get them use to the pasture afterward.   i have a couple horses, and some years we do get buttercups in the pasture,  the horses were smart enough not to mess with the buttercups.  But if yours try to eat them...

  4. You can google plants that are toxic to horses and get sites with photos of all of the known toxic weeds, trees, etc.  I do that anytime some new weed shows up in my pasture or hayfield.  Then, if it is toxic, I do more googling to find out how to kill it.  Some are more dangerous than others, so you need to find out how toxic they are, and how to respond if you think they've been eating it.  And the myth that they will avoid toxic plants is just that....a myth.  In fact, they actually crave some of them.

  5. butter cups are mildly poisonous to hoses and usually horses are natural grazers and know how to eat the right plants but i would recommend u to go online to google and look up POISONOUS FLOWERS FOR HORSES good luck.

  6. Buttercups are toxic and can be poisonous to horses

  7. They are poisonous in LARGE quantities, but they apparently taste really, really nasty, so horses won't eat them if there is ANYthing else to eat.

My fields are full of buttercups, too.  I mow them whenever possible, but eradication is nearly impossible.

I leave my horses in the fields anyway.  As long as there is other forage or hay available, they don't touch them.  I don't worry about them; there's plenty of more likely things the horses'll do to get in trouble.

  8. they are,

i think i heard from my instructer once that the only way 2 kill something properly is to burn it then replant grass.

    gd luck

  9. They are poisonous but it takes a LOT of them to cause problems.  They also avoid them if there is other grazing.

  10. Buttercups may cause:

    irritation of the mouth area

    colic like symptoms

    diarrhea

    Buttercups are toxic to horses

  11. yes buttercups are poisonous to horses as are these

    plants:

    ragwort

    yew

    laburnum

    lauriel

    foxglove

    privet

    hemlock

    white companion

    horsetail

    acorns

    deadly nightshade

    woody nightshade

    meadow saffron

    monkshood

    water dropwort

    black bryony

    bracken

    rhododendron

  12. Yes they are, but you can get rid of them by using round up spray or by topping the field. they are not poisonous when they are dried ( so don't panic if you find them in your hay.)

Generally horses won't eat them unless they are actually starving as they taste really bad, they like ground that has a tendency towards being wet.
