I would like to know if Canadians are allowed to own machine guns, sub-machine guns and assault rifles. I know we are allowed to own pistols, muskets, muzzle-loaders, rifles and shotguns, but what about machine guns, sub-machine guns and assault rifles?

  1. Last week my friend (who says he is looking into gun licenses in Ontario) told me that you are not allowed to own anything that is fully automatic.

  2. Most any semi-automatic type firearms will be prohibited in Canada.  The Canadian parliment just recently passed alot of draconian gun laws.  It bans almost everything that looks remotely military.    You would have to get some serious permits to have one and on a strict discretionary basis.    Machine guns are banned as well...(Class 3 weapons...Full auto)

  3. Fully automatic machine guns and SMGs were banned in 1976. Only people who owned one prior to this year can still legally have one. There are about 5,000 of them in legal circulation in all of Canada.

Now you cannot own even semi-automatic clones of assault rifles or virtually any semi-automatic rifles (even hunting ones!). They were all banned in 1995 by the prohibited weapons order no. 13. These were not grandfathered and people had to turn them in and have them destroyed or hide them from the Canadian government. Many innocent people have been arrested and even had their homes confiscated for breaking gun laws that they did not even know existed.
