well in the US the one drop rule applies and bc many caribbeans like haiti to Dominican have traces of african blood in them, some more than the other, will they be comsidered african-american/black/african decent OR are they considered hispanics? Bc in south america they are those who are techniqually black from Brazil and french Guinea to back to central america of guatamala to els alvador. some are more hispanic, while majority are a mix of indian, european and black and some more african decended. what's the deal? how does america calcualate it? Are they hispanics, african-american or other?

  1. I have always just considered them to be Caribbean. More specifically, the island they are from.  Haitian, Jamaican, etc.  If someone wants to be labeled as being something different, they can specify.  I would never call a citizen of another country an American.

  2. If anyone ever told me that i am african american i would die laughing. I'm not american or african, i am Trinbagonian.

  3. I always thought Caribbeans were considered to be Afro-Caribbeans, meaning that they have African and Caribbean ancestry. I think the term African American can be misleading. For one not all black people are American. Some are: Caribbean, African, Brazilian, etc.

I don't think it's fair to clump us all in one group without considering culture and language. We are apart of the African diaspora. Please see link below.

Also, what if the person is white and they were born in Africa and become U.S. citizens. Wouldn't they be considered African American, too? That's why I just like the term black. It leaves no questions about race. It's plain and simple.

  4. I would not consider them African- America. The tern applies to the black people that are from slave decent here in America.

My husband is cuban : this is why they consider themselves Hispanic.

Cuba was made up by indegenous people, When the spainards arrived to Cuba they had many slaves with them, so that is how you get the whole, Spaniard- Africa- Indegeanous. Also there primary language in many of the countries that you mention is Spanish. Not all have this mixture but it is  very common.

What is funny, is that me being form Mexico , & hubby from Cuba, you can still tell a lot of cuban words that are from Africa , Spain and American.

For example: File ( usa) - Archivo (Mexico) - File (Cuba).

    Oreja (Mexico)- Huataca (Spain)
