  1. It is about two things, money and messes.  Tile is cheaper and more resilient to spills, marble is very expensive and very open to staining.

  2. Marble tiles will become dull in tile because the kitchen is a heavy traffic area.  I am a tile man, I do not recommend marble tile in the kitchen floor.  Have you considered porcelain tiles?  They are hard, durable and some have the look of marble.  For more information, see my web site.

  3. I would suggest Porcelain.  Marble is a natural stone - which means a few things.  It is expensive, it requires more maintenance, and it is more susceptible to scratching, staining, and if polished - is far more slippery.  If honed, then it is ever MORE susceptible to the staining, etc.  Ceramic is great & has been used for thousands of years, but porcelain offers many benefits.  Often you can find a rectified type of porcelain, which means it is a color-thru material.  That means that if it did chip, it would be the same color through & through - unlike a cermaic.  Porcelains often have better MOHs  ratings (better slip-resistance) & scratch-hardness.  And they come in many beautiful natrual-like patterns with high variation, to look more like stone.  Because of their cost & durability & easy maintenance, I vote for porcelain as the best value over ceramic or marble.  Good luck!

  4. Most European homes have marble flooring but keep in mind that the structure of the homes are also different from what we have , they are made with concrete and the floors are capable to sustain the weight of a heavy flooring , I rather go with ceramic floors with the type of home that I have ,unless your is built stronger then go for it but it' s made with wood don't!

Don't get the wrong idea about marble ,these floors need to be polished to maintain the shinning they are strong especially the marble that is cut for the floors , the one that is used on counter top is much lighter in comparison to the one used for the floor and is also more porous .

  5. Marble floors are gorgeous,  but they are expensive, they are cold to walk on, even in the summer.  If you drop anything on a marble floor it will probably break or crack, the same goes for the marble counter top, droop a cup, or glass on it and consider it history, where as on ceramic there could be a chance of it surviving.  Staining is another issue, marble being porous will suck up that stain and it is threre for ever.

  6. There are some great answers for you here.  A few additional thoughts:

    >Marble is very slippery, which isn't ideal for kitchens or baths, though many homeowners use it there.

    >If your home is lavish, marble is a more expected and appropriate material than ceramic tile.

    >If your home is standard or entry-level, marble will be out of place and you probably won't recoup your investment.

    >Marble and ceramic tile are both very hard to stand on for long periods of time.  If you spend hours in the kitchen preparing meals or entertaining guests, you might want to consider something kinder and gentler underfoot!

    >There are other great flooring materials to consider.  Porcelain, as mentioned in another response, is an excellent tile alternative -- especially in "through-body" color that won't show chips as much.  Wood, cork and linoleum are also good options.  Linoleum???  Yep.  Check it out in my Designing a Kitchen for Yao Ming posting:
