Question:

Are Christianity and the Tao incompatible?

One is the belief in the deity of Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. The other is a philosophy of balance in all things. Are they incompatible?

Your own thoughts please, don't cut-and-paste at me.

  1. Yes, they are incompatible.  Christianity does not attempt to balance good and evil.  Christianity is the rejection of anything and everything evil - it does not accept it, and it does not tolerate it.

God can not look upon sin - He hates it, and will eventually eliminate it.  The end goal of Christianity is the destruction and elimination of all evil.

  2. Nope. How can a antagonistic religion be balanced with anything it tries to annihilate when it is in their path. Christianity is the only religion that is being rebuked at here. It shows how incompatible it can be becos it denies others of what they claim. There is no place for any other things in Christianity.............other values, beliefs, traditions which makes it a religion that is too full of itself.

  3. religion is weak

  4. Sort of compatible yes...but not fully.  There is no balance in Christianity.  Thus, you cannot embrace Daoism fully and be Christian.  There is no evil god to balance the christian god for instance Satan is not balanced with the Christian God.

  5. Seems most people confuse Taoism with a religious ideology. Taoism is like Confucianism in that they are both "philosophies." Buddhism and Christianity are religions, but I digress. Obviously, you were already aware of that.

From my own experiences I believe that the two are most compatible, indeed. Jesus spoke a lot about a sort of Yin/Yang duality within humans, though Jesus' idea was to align yourself in the center, to live life to the fullest without destroying yourself or others. As Taoism is about balance, the two nearly coincide.

Unfortunately, Modern Christianity has strayed very far from what Jesus of Nazareth originally intended, though even in the gospel he spoke about knowing that people wouldn't really understand him; that they would just take what they wanted run with it. Instead of trying to be truly neutral, like Christ, people wanted to be extremely yin or extremely yang. It's well known that when aligning oneself to a particular side of a duality, conflict is certain to follow from against the other. Original Christianity, like Taoism, was about balancing the two forces within your self, and going straight down the middle, so to speak.

  6. Tao is compatible with Christianity.  However, Christianity is not compatible with any other belief system.

  7. All religions are compatible, but if you mix religions it's called New Age.

All religions are quite similar if you think about it. For example most religions have some kind of God. Tao is the 'God' of Taoism since it created everything.

  8. Taoism and Christianity are incompatible. Tao is nothing more than a shadow of the reality of Christianity.

    Tao gives birth to one,

    One gives birth to two,

two gives birth to ten thousand things.

This is a recount of Christian teachings (Genesis) and pushed me from following Taoism to following Christianity (years before I became baptized).

Moreover, Christianity claims that Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life and no one sees the father except by Him.

Taoism believes in balance, but Christianity does not. Christians believe in the triumph of Good over Evil. If "balance" is followed completely, then for every Good act you commit, you must commit an equal evil act. If you choose not to commit an evil act, then the Universe (Tao) must allow or produce an evil act in another area in order to compensate for your goodness. Taoism does not really believe in balance, but rather in harmony. Yet this harmony is defined as Good and Evil coexisting. Personally, I would rather see love, kindness and goodness conquer evil, not coexist.

  9. They are not compatible. Christianity is the realest faith. Taoism is not real.

  10. they have very different basis of religious background. I would tend to think that the christian would be harder to understand the Tao then the other way around. any religion can work together as long as love is the common thread. without it nothing will work well. problem with Christianity and many major religions is kids are force feed it as children (myself included) and its hard to break out of those habits to find your own spirituality and reasoning of a higher being. with Christianity its about good and evil which i guess is a balance as well..., but not really so much because it doesn't really work out. Tao is trying to find that balance. OK I'm rambling Namasté.

  11. I think so buddhism is compatible with all other religions, and tao is similar to buddhism so I don't see why not.

    :D

  12. Tao says there are many ways.

Jesus claimed to be The Way.

  13. Yes. Taoists believe nothing like Christians. The closest thing to a god they worship is the Sun. They would not respect the commandments. They might even laugh at them.
