Are Cicadas back this year?

I've noticed large bugs that are quite loud flying around. Are these cicadas?

I know in Northern Illinois they are not to come back until 2024 (every 17 yrs)

Yes, depending on where you live. 17-year cicadas are back in Cape Cod, as well as some ther places this year. Also Dogday Harvestflies are a kind of cicada that come every year.

Yes it is true that cicadas are only supposed to come every 17 years, but they come in great swards then. Every year a small number of cicadas come out and make wierd and loud noises.  With all the development now-a-days who can really expect them not to come out.
