Question:

Are Crazy Daisies (Shasta daisies) supposed to be in full sun?

I have two of these daisies. They both get full sun, but one probably gets a little more sun than the other, especially late afternoon sun. Anyone, the one that gets a bit less sun is doing very well, but the other one wilts whenever the temperature gets hot (like around 90 degrees) and I have to run out and give it a drink. Then it perks back up. I live in Zone 5 (Chicago). Should I move the wilter to a less sunny location? Thanks!

  1. They like mornnig sun only.Afternoon and evening shade.I worked at a nursery this spring and learned a lot as I watered them and placed then for sale.

  2. Yes, mine do best in Morning sun.

  3. You answered your own question!  Good for you;-)  Yes, move it closer to where the other is or in the same lighting conditions.  I often move plants around when they seem to not like their current home.  I move them until they're happy and thriving.  Dahlias are supposed to be fine in sun or shade but one of my dahlias started drooping when the temps started rising but then again it was preparing to bloom.  It was far too mature to move so I just keep it watered and will know next year not to put the bulb in the same place;-)  Move it I say!  However everything I've read says full sun for shasta daisies?  Mine are in full sun for about 6 hours each day but I generally water every other day if we are having a dry spell.

  4. I live in California, where it can get to 115 F, and in our weather, they do prefer a little afternoon shade, but in your situation, they should do best in full sun.

Maybe try giving them a good deep soaking now and then, instead of giving them lots of frequent little waterings. I would say watering them every other day should be fine.

  5. Don't move either of them.  They don't particularly like to be moved around, especially this time of year.  They prefer full sun but will tolerate part.  If it starts to wilt just give it water, thats what they like.
