Question:

Are Crittertrail cages suitable for female rats?

I wanted to know, will they get stuck in the tubes? Or would it suffice for them if I got a CritterTrail Three and added extensions? They are females, and not huge, but average size.

  1. id recommend at least a Savic Freddy for any rat as they need a lot of space to play and entertain themselves

  2. Absolutely not. No hamster cage is sufficiently sized for rats. Rats require large, multi-level cages much like ferrets. I have a write up on some good cages here: http://www.petinfopackets.com/rats/ratca...

Aquariums are not appropriate either, contrary to what some answerers seem to think.

  3. Rats need big cages i used to have 2 female rats and although they dont grow as big as male rats they still need lots of room and space. What i did was brought a rat cage there suitable because there made for rats and added tunnels big enough for them and used old pieces of material and tied them to both sides of the cage to make little hanging baskets for them which they loved i also got some wood and made a little run and they used to just run around in that when i was cleaning there cage.

  4. Crittertrails are not suitable cages for rats. They're painfully small, and rats will not fit in the tubes. They're definitely not cages you should consider.

Instead, get a good quality wire rat cage. I've heard good things about this cage.

  5. i suggest a 20 gallon tank, they are cheaper and bigger

  6. not big enough. you need to have a cage where they wont be able to escape. you need a cage specially for rats

  7. Absolutely not! Many Syrian hamsters get stuck in the tubes, and they are smaller than a rat. Crittertrails are not big enough for ANY animal on their own, in my opinion. I have 4 connected for single dwarf.

Rats really do need a big cage.

  8. I think they should stop making the Crittertrail cages.  I don't think they're big enough for a hamster let alone a rat.  Maybe they could be used for mice.

  9. The crittertrail cage is a bit small, even for female rats, and the way they would have to climb really high just to reach the water bottle. It might be okay for younger rats but for elderly rats they might not have the strength to climb up all the time.

The tubing makes the cage harder to clean also.

This calculator will give you a good indication of what cages are suitable (by size)

  10. Critter trail cages are not suitable for grown rats of either gender. The tubes are far too small for the rats to fit into-so they'd be stuck in the main area only, and since you have more than one rat, they're going to be super-cramped. you probably wouldn't have room for a wheel big enough for rats to run in, so they're going to be stuck in a tiny area with no room to run.

I keep rats (boys, but they're little), and I also have a crittertrail cage. I keep my baby rat in there until he's big enough to move into the big cage, but he's less than three months old and is already nearly too large to fit through the tubes. A grown rat would never fit comfortably within-it would be cruel and inhumane.

The Critter trail three is a step in the right direction. However, the rats won't be able to fit through the tubes when they're grown. The wheel that comes with it is too small for a rat. For the price you would pay for that, you're much smarter to get a legitimate rat cage. It might be an extra $20, but the rats will be so much more comfortable and it will be a lot easier for you in the long run (easier cleaning, much less smelly).

The superpet deluxe critter home would be a good choice, or even the Super Pet Deluxe Rat My first home cage. The costs are pretty similar (the second one is cheaper) and you'll have enough room for the rats to run around and be happy.
