  1. Why wouldn't they? Yes they use the same technology the regular doppler radar uses.  How do you think the NWS can tell if a severe thunderstorm is producing damaging winds.  The DOW recored 318mph in the Moore, OK tornado of May 3,1999.  The DOW is also used to look for rotation in a supercell thunderstorm.  If you have any more questions feel free to email me.
