Are Daschunds or Whippets outdoor dogs (read all the extra detail)?

The climate in which I live is generally 20 degrees Celsius in Winter and 27 - 35 degrees in Summer. Autumn and Spring are in the middle of these temperatures. I have a large garden being approximately 55m square metres, this would be where the dog would live. I would see the dog many times a day (being with it most of the day) and give it at least 45 minutes of exercise. Thank you!

P.S PLEASE do not comment about dogs being part of the family and needing to be inside because unfortunately this is not possible. I would be able to see the dog just as much as I would if it were inside.

  1. They can live outdoors, but from experience daschunds are general indoor dogs they like home comforts. The dogs may also become very stressed if temps saw.

    Whippets need a h**l of a lot of exercise because they are natural running dogs so will happily live out doors, but need 3-4 runs per day.

    It's nice to hear that you are going to dedicate a lot of time to them, you sound like a fantastic owner.

    (make sure they have a kennel/house of some kind to sleep live in the plastic one are easier to clean)

    Hpe i helped and good luck

  2. I cant really tell you but these websites might help

  3. the answer is simple;

    If you cannot keep the dog INSIDE at night (all night) and part of the day (in extreme weather; hot OR cold) then DO NOT GET A DOG.

    Period.

  4. Dachshunds and Whippets are outdoor dogs - BUT SHOULD NOT LIVE OUTDOORS.  Short answer therefore..... NO (although I have to qualify that with that's a general comment and I don't know where you are intending to keep said dogs).   You quote average temperatures and I'd be very concerned about the higher, 35C in summer - these days 35C can increase to 40C in a blink, and that's way too hot to expect any animal to survive in, imvho.

    Suggest you wait until you have a better environment to offer a dog.  Sorry, I had to say that!

  5. A) It's sad that you realize it's wrong to keep a dog outside and plan to do it anyway.  Very very sad.

    B) Whippets cannot EVER live outdoors, they are very delicate and sensitive.

    C) A Dachshund left outside would dig a hole under the fence and never be seen again- they are destructive escape artists when bored or lonely, and you will not be able to contain one that really wants to leave (and with the home you plan to give it, it will definitely want to leave).

    I have no idea why you would want to lock a dog outdoors and torment it that way.  It's a very selfish attitude on your part, and personally, I'm disgusted by it.
