They are called earwigs and they smell like earwax. Be careful... the earwigs might enter your ear. Get rid if you have babies.

Earwigs are supposed to burrow into the ear and lay eggs.

Not true.  They like warm dark places, and can get into the ear.  That's not pleasant.  And before modern medicine, I'm sure that an ear infection from having an earwig jammed in your ear was deadly, or at least highly unpleasant...

But, in the unlikely case that an earwig finds it's way into your ear, go have it removed.

Forficula auricularia or the common earwig is not in any way dangerous. It was thought once they climbed in the ears of peasants lying on the ground; and sent them mad.But that is because they are a nocturnal insect. Perhaps one or two found their way into an  ear or two?But the only thing they feed on is flowers and fruit.
