Are English teachers sought after in the UK?

I know it's difficult to get work as a history or music teacher in most schools because they have small departments... what about English?

English is not much more sought after in the UK than history or music is.  You should look at what is offered for Maths and Science teachers.  The focus is more in that direction.  Good luck.
