Are GPS maps updated?

If I purchase a GPS system will it be updated. For example if I a new street is built will I have to do something to update it?

It probably depends on the system.  My handheld Garmin can be updated by loading a map database contained on a CD.  It won't get the location of new roads, etc. from the satellite.  The systems that can display real-time information, like traffic tieups, may also get updates for new roads.  I would question the salesman or or read the website closely if this is an important feature for you.

Yes the GPS uses government satilights so it will automatically update

Many portable GPS devices have an access port so that you can connect to your PC for updates, some of them you will need to buy an updated SD card to get updated maps, they aren't updated automatically when a new street is built
