I want to buy a Garmin Nuvi 760 and I have no problem with the $450 price tag but I do have a problem spending $450 if the unit is useless in a couple of years.

How much new technology do you think these companies can incorporate into these units every few years?

  1. Well, since they go off of satellites for informaiton, I would say you are safe.  Voice activated commands will be the features these will add soon.  But the functionality of your device will be unchanged.  Pretty much think of it as an appliance.

The only thing you have to be cautious of is the map updates.  Make sure you are aware of how much it will cost to get the updates.  Usually it is $100.

  2. Buy it. Longitude and latitude and buildings aren't going to move anytime soon.

  3. A GPS is a little bit different because the whole device is based around what type of information can be given to you based on your position.

The maps that the GPS uses may become obsolete however for example the 2009 Map Update for Garmin GPS Receivers is available for only $50 right now.

Some general public may include tracking systems in the future but then this is almost a totally different device because once that is included it becomes a transmitter too.

So for the near future, say 5 years or so, you can expect only software and map updates to take place.
