Hi All,

Don't you think that Germany are more sophisticated than Americans? I recently was in Germany and I've noticed that more than 85% of the Germans are stylish including the ones who are in the small towns. They follow the fashion so much. Also, they care about prestigue a lot. It's uncomparable to the US. Did anyone else notice that same thing?

  1. I have the exact opposite opinion.  I moved to Germany 4 months ago, and long to go home and shop.  I live in a small town, and there is only one or two stylish stores here, and you pay outrageous prices for something that would cost so much less in the States.

We went to Italy recently, and the English and German people were going nuts at a flea market because clothes, accessories, and shoes were so cheap.  Trust me, I bought things too-things you cannot get in my town.

I think it depends on the person, not the country where you live.  My sister is a fashionista, and my friend is not.  The same here in Germany, some people are, some are not.

  2. Germans are not ''up to date on style.''  first off they make their own style or the other half wears what hollywood stars wear.....there is no real style...the rico slavves you seen are turks and they buy their D&G in turkey for nothing.....the style you see germans wear you would not catch a normal american wearing on their best day.....simply because its considered gayishh....by americans.  most up to date styles will remain the same just with a different LOGO.....Germany wants to be so modern but they ''overdress'' to simply go and buy a pair of shoes and groceries...why do you think the euro is skyrocketing against the dollar?  for one its on a different scale of money worth and second its supply and demand....the problem in germany is the people cant buy anything else here so when something ''new'' comes out they eat it like hot cakes.....example is the big dorky sunglassess....werent those ''out'' last year? well they just hit here last year so everyone wears them and look like a dummy....live here for a few years and you will know what I am talking about....people in Europe cannot usually get AMERICAN goods or clothes...thats why you dont see it here  unless you know a joe that can get you on an american army post....Too me their ''style of clothes for men'' is down right disgusting.

  3. Of course they are.  Everyone's more sophisticated than the Americans.  Haven't you been keeping up on Yahoo Answers?  Surely if you were, you'd know that Americans suck, and everyone else is pretty cool.

    Do try to keep up.

  4. Not all the German ppl are stylish.  Americans do tend to dress informally nowadays though it depends on their profession.  I am sure that Americans and Germans who work in financial districts tend to dress better.

  5. You know there is a difference between being sophisticated and being fashionable, right? Just because one keeps up with trends doesn't make them sophisticated. Keeping up with the world in general is being sophisticated, not jst the fashion world. (besides, it has no baring on life anyway) However, I have noticed that people in Europe in general care more about appearance and keeping up with trends than Americans, but i think Americans are more original about it.

  6. In Germany, most of the population lives in cities, with international flair. The country is more like a Mega city, where the USA  is in huge parts still rural and even most of the large cities are far from international connections. You really have to compare lets say, Frankfurt to New York or Duesseldorf to L.A. and then its the same. However, my wife is an expert on fashion and she says, Germany is always a year ahead and high end clothes are better.

  7. Interesting observation. I'll have to give it some consideration.

But for now my opinion is such: It depends on where you are in Germany as well as where you are in the US.

  8. Are you sure you aren't confusing sophistication with snobbishness?  Does being a fashion junkie make someone sophisticated?  Here it all seems to be about who has the most expensive car, the most expensive/trendy clothes, who goes to the most exotic places on vacation. . .  It makes me want to vomit.  And Germans have the nerve to say we Americans are "oberflächlich" (superficial)!

Edit:  Heheh, I knew I would get thumbs down on this one.

The truth hurts sometimes, doesn't it?

  9. I think it depends on the individual. There's plenty of sophisticated people in the US.

  10. Wow, this question is quite a conversation starter for a cocktail party...the word "sophisticated" has been warped by unsophisticated people to mean the exact opposite of it's original meaning...The Greeks did not use the term as a compliment...but I know what you are getting at..It's like describing people as "cultured". Pretty unspecific terms...

Yep, no doubt about it Germans wear nicer clothes and are put together better, generally. Also I would generally say they show more interest in what you might consider "sophisticated" thingees...The next question is "Why is that ?" Anyone ? Don't be shy.---LOL

  11. No way.      I've been there many times....One one my best friends lives there now.   It never came up as an issue.    America is just a larger country with a more diverse population....I think that's what you may be seeing.

As far as prestige is concerned...You must have missed something in the U.S.A....Try traveling around the U.S. more....Start your trip off by dropping into any Firehouse of the New York Fire Department.

  12. Ocourse they are. They much better educated than The Americans

  13. Haha.

I moved to Germany in June and had the opposite reaction.

I'm living in a very wealthy city as an Au Pair, and to me, the fashion taste of the masses is pretty bland. And not in a Chanel simplicity way either. Most of the Germans I've made friends with agree. "In Wiesbaden people only care how much it costs, it doesn't matter so much what it looks like".

There are exceptions anywhere you go, of course. I've run into handfuls of very stylish people.

I also suppose it depends on where you come from.

I'm from San Diego, California. And people are pretty fashion conscious there, but if you're from the Midwest or so, I suppose Germans would seem a bit more up to date.

    This is Fashion alone.

In manner, I would readily agree that Germans as a group tend to have a much more dignified or sophisticated persona.

Everytime I pass an American on the street here, I have to cringe. They're always loud and saying something unintelligent. It's pretty embarassing.

  14. They wish they were  LOL

  15. No, I don't believe they are.
