Question:

Are Ikea kids' beds junk? Are the mattresses comfortable? Do the bed frames hold up?

I'm thinking of purchasing an Ikea Hensvik or Minnen bed frame, mattress, etc. for my 3 year old daughter. I think they're cute and my daughter loves testing them out at the store, but I'm afraid they don't hold up well and aren't very comfortable.

  1. i thought about buying a bed from ikea for my son he was 5 at the time. it would have never held up. i love ikea furniture i have my entire living room done. but i would not buy for a boy . maybe a girl though.

  2. At my daddy's house i have an Ikea bed and its soooooo comfortable. I have had for about 5 years now and nothing is wrong with it and my sister is always jumping up and down on it and its holding up very well. Take my word for it your daughter will love it.

  3. Ikea furniture isn't as good as regular furniture mainly because its not really good quality and I have had to return 3 pieces of furniture already after 3 weeks.

  4. All of our bedroom furniture in our house, are from IKEA (beds, tables, dressers, nightstands).  I too, was very worried about the quality of the furniture holding up, especially since we have to put it together ourselves.  I must say that it has held up.  We bought the crib/toddler bed there, and it's going strong after 9 years of use!  We bought my daughter (7 yo) a twin bed that has the drawers underneath for storage over a year ago and it's great.  The mattress is fine too for her, she doesn't complain.

  5. At Ikea, i prefer quality over quanity.

But i bought the Minnen bed frame and mattress set and i have no problems with it.

  6. my cousin is an ikea addict and swears by there furniture but as for me some of there things are poorly constructed great prices but not the best quality. as far as the matresses over time they are c**p and become lumpy so i've heard. but  for a 3 year old it should be ok i just wouldnt think about keeping it for the long haul maybe a few years or so

  7. Minnen and Hensvik are both really good quality, made from real wood, rather than fibreboard.

The mattresses for the kids beds are the same quality as the ones for the standard beds, and are tested in the same regard, and have high approval from many chiropractors.

All that said, as a general rule of thumb at Ikea--don't look at who is making it (ie. it's "cheap" furniture), look at what it is made of, and the care instructions. Ask someone working there if they know how long the product has been around (they can check that for you). Bear in mind, also, that a good quality product doesn't need a warranty for it to be good quality--warranties add value, and that raises the price.
