  3. Iranian people are a branch of the Indo-European people, the term Iran is derived from Arya which is a Persian/Sanskrit word ,Persians belong to the western branch of Iranian or Indo-Iranian people, Indo-Iranian people include those natives of the greater  Persian / Iranian  plateau who speak Indo-Iranian languages ,like Persians,Kurds,Armenians etc.

but today the term "Iranian" is used more as a nationality since there are also Turkic and Arabic people living in the Iranian /Persian plateau and they have adopted the term "Iranian" as their nationality (like the Azerbaijani Turks who belong to the Turkic group ).

but when referring to the Persians we are referring to the native Aryan or Indo-European inhabitants of Iran .The Persians belong to the Indo-European people and so does their language ,they are considered as white people but not Nordic (Scandinavian) if thats what you mean by "white"

people have different features due to different  geographic and climatic conditions, for example Persians in Tehran might have lighter skin color then Persians in Bushehr but they are from same origin.

many people may have blonde features but not belong to the Indo-European (Aryan) race ,and on the other hand many people may have darker features but carry the Indo-Iranian (Aryan) gene.

The  Haplogroup R1 is a Y-chromosome DNA haplogroup, a subgroup of haplogroup R, associated with the M173 mutation. It is dominated in practice by two very common Eurasian clades, R1a and R1b, which together are found all over Eurasia except in Southeast Asia and East Asia.

The R1a is considered to be the Indo-iranian (Aryan) gene ,inside Iran the Ra1 haplogroup is carried mainly among the Persians ,mainly in central and eastern parts of the country ,while the western parts only carry % the reason that the western parts are less influenced by this gene is because we have 3 major Azeri inhabited regions in west and the Ra1 is very low among the Azerbaijanis its as low as 7% ,and this nr even decreases when we include it with all of Irans population .Azerbaijanis are about 18-20 mil so despite having many Persian provinces in west the Azeri population has lowered the precentage of the Ra1 gene in the western parts of Iran .but the Persians in  western and central parts as well as the northern  highlands (Gilan and Mazandaran) carry 34-38% Ra1,and thats considered as high Persians make about 51 -56% of Irans population ,in countries like Italyand Greece the Ra1 is as low as 10-20 %.

what i found very strange is that the Azeris in Iran carry a very high precentage of the J2 haplogroup which is known as the Arabic gene the J2 is carried at the highest around lake Urmia ,its even higher then 30% ,the influence of J2 in Iran is about 30% and the Azeris are the most carriers .in countries like Italy and Greece the J2 is as high as 30-48 % also half of the Turkish population in Anatolia carry the J2 ,but the highest precentage is found among the Georgians 72%

also about the Persian language Parsi which sometimes is called Farsi is the direct descendant of the Persian language spoken by the Achaemenians (Avestan) ,later it was developed into Pahlavi and today we speak Pahlavi Persian it is influenced by some arabic ánd French but it has also influenced Arabic and Turkish and many many other languages .its an Indo-European (Aryan) language belonging to the western Indo-Iranian languages

  4. Well, first of all, I'm an Iranian who is living here in Iran...So my answer should be considered more correct...In Iran there are people of different races...You can find people as white as Europeans while you can't find people as black as Africans!... In Iran, those who live in North are whiter than those who live in South...In Iran, you can find people with light color eyes, blue or brown to people with dark color eyes, brown or black... However, most people have white skins (Not as white as Europeans) with Black hair and Black or Brown eyes...Also their head structure is like Earopeans...

  5.  the are white but in some of them are mixed by arabs.

  6. they are caucasians for sure. Everyone agrees with persians, kurds, azeris, armenians, georgians, circassians, turks, pashtuns, kashmir, parsi, levantine arabs, northern african arabs  etc as Caucasians.

Whether white or not, there is 2 side of the meaning 'white' here.

Ask yourself, what is white? White as in skin tone or White as in caucasian ?

Truthfully speaking, there are 4 human races in this world.

    Negroid,Mongoloid, Australoid and Caucasoid.

Middle easterners,Europeans,Russians,Pakistanis and North Indians.People from the Caucasus are ALL Caucasians. Then, we could further break them down to branches of either White or Non-White Caucasians. It's that simple, really. ;-)

  7. I say, as an Iranian Kurd of Kermanshah, inside Iran that Iranian people are from different ethnics (Kurds, Persians, Azeris, Armenians, etc. There are also a very small minority of Arabs, in southwestern parts of the country who are not Aryans).  But specially in the capital Tehran, you can find all the ethnic groups in large number (due to immigration), who consider themselves as Tehranese! (most of them). Maybe the term 'Persian' is sometimes mistakenly used to refer to Iranians. But 'Persia' was used before 1935 to refer to Iran. 'Iran' means 'land of Aryans', not just Persians. Iranians are certainly not black. Mixture of ethnics has gave most of them a white skin color (many of them, not as white of europeans, but Iranian people with a skin color as white as europeans, with blonde hairs and light eyes color (blue, green) are not uncommon. Also a white dark skin color (but not as dark as brown!) is common (you may see some of the people of some parts of south and south-west of the country with a darker skin as is usual), but a white skin color with black/brown hair and eyes is the most common appearance.

  8.  well i have seen many iranians/persians white .....but there are many races in iran ...like 35% white with blonde hair and blue/green eyes !  and 30% black hair with green eyes ! and again 30% black or dark brown hair .. with brown eyes/lighter even ...and 5% with a a little darker skin and black hair with brown or black eyes ! lolol

  9. Lots of good as well as dumb answers here.

I try to explain this as a Scientist/Geneticist who happens to be Persian.

Persians and Azaris (a Turkic group) make up Iran and all under one umbrella are Iranian. Ancestors of Persians are supposed to be Aryans that many in Europe and also northern India also share. Realistically, these battlefield areas have gotten other mixes through many wars. Also realistically, people of these ancient areas of the world are so nationalistic that they have LESS mixes than one would imagine, for example Italians and Greeks have more Arab/Near Eastern/Semitic blood than do Iranians/Persians due to a different history. Arabs/Jews/Iranians, North Africans, etc as well as Northern Europeans, etc are ALL CACASIANS. The name Caucasian comes from the caucuses, a region that is assumed the ancestors of these people first lived, which was BTW part of Persia until about 150 yrs ago ( so Persians in a way are more Caucasian than the rest if one goes by historical meanings).

In order to know who is Caucasians and who is not, you just have to imagine this. If you mix an Arab and Swede or a Persian than a Swede, without a doubt, the child will be a mix, something like 60% /40%, more with the darker feature, but a lot lighter than the darker parent. If you were to mix a Persian with an Asian or a Swede with an Asian, the child without a doubt will resemble the Asian parent, in a 80-90% phenotypically with Asian dominating.

Another matter is anatomy. If you look at the anatomical structure of an Arab or Persian vs. a Swedish person, the skulls and the structures will resemble a lot. But if you compare someone from African or Mongloid race (Asian), even a 2 yr old child could tell them apart.

My husband is of Scottish English background, I am a Persian with pale white skin, dark brown eyes and black hair. My son has RED hair ( like his father) and has Hazel/Greenish/Gray. It is as if I picked him up from a train station in London. That is the best example for anyone who can’t quite get it why Persians are white, and what the h**l Caucasian really means.

I also got my DNA ancestry checked and my closest math was Irish followed by Polish, Italian, Afghanistan and France. I had NO Arabian and Mesopotamian & also now Asian, my map was all over western and southern Europe. There really is something to these names, I am convinced.

    Hope it helped.

  10. Definatly not black, Persian is the same term as Iranian and is sometimes considered a race as well

Iranians are Indo-European meaning that our ancestors came from Europe and in the Nationality chart thingies we are considered white and caucasian because of that but there are alot of races mixed into Iran so you can't really bunch everyone together

Although people in the North might have really really fair skin the southern parts usually have tanned skin

  11. Iranian is a nationality, just like "American" or "Canadian". Persian is a racial background, just like "Caucasion" and "Oriental", and Islam is a religion, like "Christianity. You are all getting it mixed up! Now most Iranians (ie. citizens of Iran) are Persians, but some are also of Arab and Turk decend. Furthermore, not all Persians are from Iran (though most are). Some can be from Afganistan, Turkaminstan, and other countries boarding Iran.

Now that we've gotten the basics down, let's get to the original question: What are Iranians? Are they white? Well of course not! I just told you they are (for the most part) Persian! And DEFINITLY NOT Caucasion. Skin colour is NOT the only indication of race, so even though indeed some Iranians have very light complexation, they are not of white-decend (caucasion). So who exactly are the Persians? They are of the Aryan decend...which is I am not going to get into as it's beyond the scope of this thread.

I am Persian, from Iran, and I have light complexation, but I don't go around saying I am white. Why? Because I am not! I am Persian, that's my racial background. Where am I from? My parents are originally from Iran, I was born and raised in Canada. Got it? Good.

Those Persians who insist they are "white"/"caucasion" are suffering from a "self-hating" complex who are ashamed of their background. This is mainly due to the revolution that took place about 30 years ago in Iran that made the country into an Islamic state, and the chaotic events that have followed ever since.

SO summary: Iranians live in Iran, and most are Persian (that's their race). Persians, on the most part do have moderately light skin complexation (as compared to most Arabs and Indians), but they are not Caucasions.

  12. I have Iranian friend and he is brown but more on the lighter side(like me and im European Gitano Gypsy) his brother is lighter and his cousin looks bit like chinese so i think their colour varies and he is 100% Iranian and very good friend and now becoming member of our family ;-)

  13. The persians are the iranian. persia is the previous name of iran untill 1933 when officially the name of the country changes to Iran but note that to iranians it has allways called Iran but for western people it had been recognised persia untill changed in 1933.

most of northern and western part of iran are light skin, brown orblond hair like germanic and european but the southern settlers are a little darker, their skin is tanned but there is still a huge difference between them and black people. their hair, Lips, Jaw or head or any thing else is like white people. in summary just their skin is a little darker the other traits are the same as whites. there is no black like african or arab black in iran.

and do note that the persians are not arabs their language and their appearance and culture is totally defferent. even in thier religeon is different iranain are shiate but the arabs are sonny which is a lot of difference is religeous culture.

  14. iranians are very beautiful/white/kind

i have a boy friend he is iranian and he has attractive face(white skin/black eyes&hair)

  15. According to History books and years of studying the origins of Europeans it has been determined that white europeans originted in persia. The Medes and Persians (two kindred groups) were refered to themselves as Aryans. They spoke an Indo-european language which most European languages today are classed under.

Modern Persian (Farsi ) is heavily influenced by Arabic and it would seem the people themselves have been influenced by something similar too, since they hardly look like europeans. Some look like Italians, and a few look a little Germanic but these are in the minority.

So, looking at the facts, their appearance, the answer is obvious...they cannot be white.

  16. Iranians are not white, Please get it right.. They are as well mullatos. Black & White.

  17. yes im persian and im white ... no dobt about that .. iranian are white ... az the matter of fact we are the origion of aryan.. but there is one truth :
some of us could be mixed

  18. They are not Black, they are not Oriental. They are not Indian (red-skin) So what's left? Brown or white? They are primarily caucasian, although they have been mixed with Arabs, Mongols and Turkic tribes- some have dark skin and some light skin, but majority have olive skin. BTW, there is no race called the Iranian/Persian race. Some of their women have the cutest eyes and killer looks.

Another test of whiteness is when Iranians mix with Europeans. Notice when white mix with Asians, blacks or browns the children are not considered white. However, almost all mixed Iranian+ European white children look undoubtedly white.
