Are Japanese children protected from sexual magazines and cartoon ?

No, just like kids from other countries they  don't read them in front of their parents.

The Japanese (from Japan) typically show their young more "mature" things at a younger age, especially compared to America (if that is where you live).

For instance, a movie that's PG-12 (or 13) in the US, it may be 3+ or 4+ in Japan.

So "protected", maybe not. The shows they watch can have some sexual content in it regularly.

But the real extreme, even-you-wanna-cover-your-eyes kinda sexual content is probably not regularly viewed by Japan's youngsters.
