Question:

Are Jordanhill & Hyndland the only 2 good state schools in Glasgow?

My job is taking me to Glasgow and my daughter goes into secondary school next year.

We've been looking at the results from all the other schools, and apart from Hyndland & Jordanhill they are all average or much worse.

Very expensive to live there though, and if we don't live there we'll never get a place?

  1. I'm sure there'll be more good schools, even if you try areas in the suburbs of Glasgow like Bearsden Academy.

  2. There are 2?

  3. Yes. Jordanhill is one of the best high schools in Scotland but apparently...today (17.6.08) there was a report out saying that Castlemilk High was quite acheiving but I'm not to sure.

    See for yourself.

  4. in glasgow any  good state schools ate going to be in areas where it is expensive to live... that's just how it works. I have heard that hose schools are better than the rest (which is not saying much) it may be cheaper to live in a less expensive area and send her to a private school...

just a thought -  good luck anyway

  5. Yes they are..

Jordanhill is the best school in Scotland, only because of the catchment area that it covers - like all schools its only as good as its pupils. You'd only get in if you lived nearby so its no use living further away and commuting.

There are plenty of private schools if you're willing to pay but of course there's the obvious downsides to that.

The only thing I could suggest is living nearby a train station so you could commute to Uddingston or Motherwell or Hamilton. Journeys like that would take no more than half an hour by train, and if you get a Zone Card it covers the cost of travel pretty well.

Generally any public school in the West of Scotland isn't going to be that great but there are some that are decent.

But yes, unless you live within the school's (exclusive) catchment area your daughter won't get a place.

  6. St. Andrew's Academy in the east end of the city but i doubt you'd want to live there! look at just outside the city like uddingston or somwwhere.

  7. For state schools Jordanhill is the best school in Scotland but is extremely difficult to get into and I think has quite a restrictive catchment area. In addition, I would also consider Lenzie Academy.

If you can pay, I would highly recommend the Independent sector. Schools such as The High School of Glasgow, Hutchesons' Grammar School and The Glasgow Academy all have academical excellence with a long distinguish history.

Generally Independent schools in Scotland are far better then their state companions.

Good luck in finding a good school.

PS the answer to your question is yes. They are the best two state schools in Glasgow!
