Are Knighthood's given away too easily?

E.g. Kelly Holmes (now Dame Kelly Holmes) won two gold medals in the Olympic's, yes that is an achievement, but is it worth a knighthood? I thought that Knighthood's were awarded for selfless actions to help Britain, a few people have actually rejected Knighthood's because they dont feel worthy of them conidering what they have done.

All titles should be done away with period.  That includes the title of Queen.

The honours list is drawn up by the government. So they get the blame for whoever is knighted, the Queen (or Prince Charles) only carries out the ceremony.

being an American i haven't the first clue about what the criteria are for knighthood, though I have always wondered

i lived in England for a time but didn't have the courage at the time to find out the criteria

i was wondering when someone would ask this question because more celebrities seem to be getting knighted  and anything to do with entertainment and tradition causes controversy
