Not much has gone Liverpool’s way since the start of 2012. The Reds, who started their 2011/12 campaign on a startling note, lost their way since the turn of the year. An abysmal sequence of results forced them to settle for an eighth place finish, meaning
that the Merseyside club failed to grab a berth in the Champions League competition for the third successive season.
The team’s precarious position in the league owed much to the finishing ability of the strikers, who have, time and again, failed to translate their performances into results. Luis Suarez, though, stood as a lone exception.
The Uruguayan International was signed by the Anfield outfit in January, 2011 from Ajax for a 22 million pounds transfer fee. Since then, the 25-year old has taken the central stage in his side’s frontline. During his first 6 months, the striker mesmerized
the fans with his phenomenal skills and influential presence, sending out a strong signal towards his opponents that he meant business in the Premier League.
Although things were falling to pieces around him in the previous campaign, that did not deter the mercurial hit-man from carrying out his duties. He pocketed 17 goals for his team in all competitions, becoming the club’s highest goalscorer for the season.
And once again, Suarez is leading the Reds offence in the ongoing campaign. He fired a sensational hat-trick against Norwich City to help his side record their first league win of the season and chipped in with a goal every now and then to prevent the situation
from going from bad to worse for Liverpool.
Without a doubt, Suarez is currently the spearhead of the Reds attack. However, his inspirational presence upfront has become even more prominent due to the failure of the other attackers to make a mark, which gives an impression that the club have become
over reliant on him.
And if we carefully scrutinize the situation, one will agree with this notion.
The start of Liverpool’s demise can be traced back to the start of the year. And that is precisely the time when the Uruguayan footballer was serving out his eight-match suspension for his alleged racial slur against Manchester United’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Patrice-Evra-c29231. The
Reds failed to get to the top of things in his absence and their campaign went into a downward spiral.
Besides, newcomer, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-Borini-c13163, has also failed to deliver so far for the team, which has further increased the club’s dependence on Suarez. The Italian striker’s recent foot injury, which ruled him out for three months, has only brought Suarez’s role
into more prominence.
The Anfield boss, Brendan Rodgers, who is currently operating with limited options in his squad, has drawn on the club’s academy players in order to carry out his plans. Although some of them have looked decent so far, none have been able to establish themselves
as regular goal scorers, leaving the task for Suarez to carry out.
The good news for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 though is that the striker is not cowing away from the challenge of leading his team’s attack, rather he seems to be enjoying the experience. Nonetheless, it is one major problem Rodgers needs to tend to, as he cannot depend on
the possibility of Suarez firing all the time for the Reds. Instead, the Ulsterman needs to broaden his options upfront and seek to land in a couple of strikers during the January transfer window.
Certainly, Suarez is a weapon which has fired for Liverpool, but clearly, that alone is not working for the Merseyside club. Besides, if this weapon goes cold, things will only get worse for them.
