1. Not these particular types of medications, with the possible exception of tranquillisers, such as benzodiazapenes, which can certainly be habituating, and require very long tapering off periods, sometimes of more than a year.

Check out medications at: http://www.drugs.com/ and http://www.crazymeds.us/ and http://www.rxlist.com/ and http://www.askapatient.com/ and also ensure they don't appear on the list at: http://worstpills.org/

I disagree with the above: most depressive episodes last for an average of 6 months, so it is a good idea to take them for 12 - 18 months, with a maximum of 2 years, before discontinuing, to closely monitor the situation.

Depression recurs in around 50% of cases. The drug companies would rather have you buying their products for life, however: see section 1, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and get a quick education in the subject.

  2. anti-depressants work to replace neurochemicals you lack, or minimize production of those you make too much of. Yes, you become dependant upon them. Tranquilizers are benzodiazipines and as such are addictive over prolonged use. If you start on anti-depressants plan on taking them for life. Tranquilizers are for short term use only.
