  8. im sure there solid gold but i dont think they get the real thing till they get home.they show it off and might end up scrachting it so i think they get a replica to show off.my opinion.they say the gold is worth 60,000 us dollars so how can that be gold plated?

    Actually, a gold medal is made mostly of silver. The main reason is that gold is a fairly soft metal and it alone doesn't make a good medal. Also consider the price of gold nowandays. It would cost a tremendous amount of money to make the medals solid gold. So they take silver and coat it in gold.

    The rule is that a silver medal must contain 92.5% silver. A gold medal is the same thing, except that it is coated in at least 6 grams of 24-carat gold. A bronze medal contains copper, zinc, tin, and a tiny amount of silver.
