Patel is simply the second most common surname in India after Singh just as Smith is the most common family name in England, Scotland, and the United States.  The surname Patel denotes a landowning status, but it is not necessarily tied to a particular caste or a related group of individuals. Are all Smiths related to each other?  No, but speaking as one, we're a great group of otherwise disimilar people.  Are all  Patels related to each other? No.
