Are Rewritable DVDs a reliable data backup?

Are they as reliable as DVD-R or CD-R? Or does the fact that they can be "rewritten" mean that the data can be erased in time?

  1. No  they are not reliable over time, the only CD's and DVD's that are guaranteed for life are the store bought originals and they are reliable because they are stamped. Burnt CD's and DVD's can and will degrade over time so if you have anything you wish to keep for life find a suitable alternative OR make sure to reburn or recopy each CD/DVD every 5 yrs or so to make sure there is always a new copy.

  2. They will not be erased in time, only if you erase them.
