Question:

Are Robo dwarf hamsters like Russian dwarfs?

I have had two Russian dwarf hamsters before, and at a pet store I saw the cutest little Robo dwarf hamster. I only know what this kind looks like, and that they're very fast and sleep a lot. Do I need to get different food or items (cages, wheels, shelters, etc.) for a Robo dwarf hamster? I'm only going to get one, btw. Could some hamster expert help me out? Thank you so much!

  1. Dont mix them - two different breeds dont get on.  You can give them all the same food, including certain fresh vegs and fruit but dont put them all in the same cage,.  They like to be in groups as within their own breed they are socialble creatures

  2. Well, all dwarf hamsters have the same needs. I have been trying new types of hamsters each time. I got only one at a time though. By the way, don't get the smallest. The smallest robos are the fastest and the more timid ones. My friend has two robo hamsters. One is big and the other is small. Just yesterday we were playing with them and the big one crawled in our hands. It was like any other hamster execpt it doesn't bite whatsoever. AT ALL. Hope this helps!

P.S. I'm no hamster expert, just a hamster owner.

  3. Robos are the newest addition to the family of hamsters kept as pets. They originate from Mongolia and are the smallest of the hamster family, being only about 5cm long when fully grown. Like their relatives, the Russian hamsters, these animals are social, and live in groups, (unlike Syrian hamsters).

They are by far the fastest moving of the hamster family, and indeed are rarely still, except when they are asleep.

Roborovskii's hamsters are gentle and naturally docile but extremely fast! They rarely if ever bite but do wriggle - and if they escape they are difficult to catch, although repeated, gentle handling will calm them down somewhat. Since they are so wriggly, they are not generally recommended for anyone wanting a pet to "cuddle", unlike other dwarfs that can be held in your hand and cuddled. When they are being handled, it is best to do so over a "playbox" or normal cardboard box from the supermarket. (If a Roborovski's hamster once gets loose on the floor it will be a major challenge to retrieve!) On the plus side, however, their temperament is reliably good; bites or even nips are so rare as to be effectively unheard of. As a pet to watch, busily going about its day to day existence, they are without equal.

Their care is basically similar to that of other hamsters, particularly the other "Dwarfs". However they can escape even from hamster specific wire cage since they are so small, so they are best kept in bins, glass tanks or plastic cages. They seem to be more fond of tubes, plastic houses and hideaways than other species of hamster, and will enjoy nesting in any cardboard rolls or small boxes that are given to them.

In terms of feeding, normal hamster food suits them well and you can give the same treats you can give to your other dwarf hamsters.

  4. they look the same to me. i would say all hamsters need the same treatment pretty much.
