  1. yes they great pets. i have 4 of them and they can hibernate but it is better to not let them do that. in the summer you will want to put them in an area outside and when it starts to get cold bring them in. for where i live i bring them in late September early October

  2. russian tortoises are a good beginner tortoise, they are hardy, suited to most climates and on of the easier tortoises to care for, don't be scared of hibernating honey done the right way it is ok here are some sites to help you with your research  http://russiantortoise.org/care_sheet.ht...    http://www.tlady.clara.net/id16.htm   http://www.tortoisetrust.org/      http://www.britishchelonia.org/  have a good look and read some of the articles, the tortoise trust has some really good articles on tortoise keeping and how to hibernate safely, if you do your research first there is no reason why you can not keep a healthy and happy tortoise for lots of years, best of luck honey

  3. We have a Greek tortoise.  They stay small, they're really cool and we think they're cuter than the Russian torts.  Ours doesn't hibernate, we keep his T-REX UVA/UVB Heat lamp on and in the winter, add another lamp or two as needed to keep him warm enough (our house is a bit drafty).  The initial investment is kind of pricey, but totally worth it.

I think that you'll be totally happy with either tortoise.

  4. russian tortoises are great pets...dont be worried about them hibernating if you keep the right lights on them they wont hibernate...call a pet store and see what lights you need...alot of pet stores are making big mistakes and selling too hot of lights check multiple people to make sure its not too hot!

    Good Luck!

  5. You need to google and research the tort, and see if it seems like what you are looking for in a pet.

Here's a couple of links to get you started.

    Good luck, whatever you decide.
