  1. The more proper question should be about miles per gallon or something like that.

Is a SUV that weighs 4000 pounds and gets 17 miles per gallon more or less environmentally safe than a Rolls Royce that weighs 5000 pounds that gets 8 miles per gallon?

Many people buy a SUV because they need a SUV.  There are also many SUV's that get better miles per gallon than a lot of cars.

A small little moped or scooter gets many more miles to the gallon than 99% of the cars on the road, but they are also inpractiable for most people.

A big work van gets bad miles per gallon, but a big work van serves its purpose.  Imagine a plumber showing up at your house on a moped.  Would you label him "Eviromentally Friendly" or "Stupid"?

Yes, there are people that buy a SUV just to show off, but most people buy them because they need them.

  3. No, They go through an insane amount of gas and the vast majority of people who buy them could easily survive with a Honda Civic 5-Speed and go through a lot less gas. Just try seeing if you could afford the gas and insurance on one of these beasts. There is a reason why sales on them are near record lows now and dealers are offering off the chart discounts to get them off the lot.

  4. Have you lived under a rock the last 10 years?!
