Question:

Are Sainsbury's fondant fancies vegetarian?

Im currently looking for a place to buy some vegetarian fondant/french fancies. I know that Mr. Kipling's are not vegetarian and am now wondering about the Sainsbury's own brand version, on the back of the box it lists the whey powder as being made from milk and there are no other animal products listed that I know of, but there is no sight of the suitable for vegetarians logo seen on most other Sainsbury's cake products. So im just wondering if they are suitable for vegetarians and if not why not, but also if there are any other makes of fondant/french fancies that are suitable for vegetarians available in the UK and where I could buy them?

  1. Ok.

So sainsburys always label food vegetarian if it is suitable, the fodant fancies must have some kind of animal in it. They may have used carmine to colour the pink fondont fancie, check the label again, because its likely they're not suitable, sainsburys always put if its suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

Asda do vegetarian fondont fanices, as ive been there and checked.

I think tesco do as well.

Morrisons might do some as well.

Or you could always make your own.

    Ingredients:

    175g plain flour

    1 tsp baking powder

    175g butter , softened

    3 eggs , lightly beaten

    1 tbsp cocoa powder

13 small round dark chocolate truffles, halved

    ICING:

    100g dark chocolate

    25g butter

    6 tbsp icing sugar

50g milk chocolate , melted, to decorate

    Posh fondant fancies Chocolates

    Method:

    1.Heat the oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3.

Put the flour, baking powder, butter, caster sugar, eggs and cocoa powder into a large bowl and beat together with an electric whisk. The mixture should drop easily from a spoon, add a little water if it's too stiff.

    2. Spoon the mix into a 23cm square cake tin (try to use one without rounded edges). Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the cake is cooked through (test with a skewer). Remove from the tin and cool completely. Cut into 25 squares.

    3. Top each square with half a truffle, cut-side down.

4.To make the icing, melt the dark chocolate and butter together with 4 tbsp water in a microwave or a bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water. Mix in the icing sugar.

5.Spoon over the top of the cakes, spreading round the sides and over the truffle with a small palette knife. If the icing gets too thick, heat it up slightly. Leave the dark icing to set for a few minutes, then drizzle the milk chocolate over with a teaspoon.

Hope this helps and good luck.
