  1. no but they're traded as if they were. i think its to try and make scotland feel as tho they count.

  2. Yes

  3. Pound notes are a thing of the past, it is only pound coins now.

The Bank of England print all money used in England, in Scotland the banks are allowed to print their own notes (a settlement agreed in the Treaty of Union), Both a Pound Sterling and both have the same value. All coins in circulation throughout the UK are made by the Royal Mint. English notes can be used throughout the UK, however, Scottish notes can only be used outside Scotland with the agreement of the seller (ie they are not legal tender throughout the UK)

The Scottish notes have people and scenes of scotland printed on them...you can see many examples at http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&...

Shaddow - although Scottish money is not offical backed by the Government it would in in a independant scotland, the Scottish government if it were to control all it's own wealth and income would be more than capable of assuring the value of the notes; however without the massive amount of money contributed from Scottish gas and oil the English pound may well find it's self in difficulty. England could not bankrupt the 15th largest oil and gas producer in the world

  4. No.  They are issued by Scottish banks, but are worth the same as English notes.  Shops and businesses in England are however under no obligation to accept them.  Banks will always exchange them at face value though.

  5. There is no such thing as an English pound note only pound coins

  6. Scottish money is not actually legal tender at all, it's totally useless. Even if you have a £20 note in Scotland, it's not worth anything at all, not a penny. English money is the only legal tender in the UK, it's a very complicated system but to put it simply you don't have to accept scottish money anywhere, even if it's in Scotland. We just do accept it because it's tradition and that's how it's done but this is one reason why Scotland can never be independant. If they tried it then England could make the whole of Scotland bankrupt.

It's very interesting to know that Scots could be made bust at any time because none of their money actually has any legal worth at all!

  7. Are we talking in denominations greater than £1, as £1 notes were replaced by £1 coins in the 1980s.  They are the same in so far as they are both of equal value and are legal tender anywhere in the UK.

  8. No they're only worth 60p each.

  9. Scottish notes are bank notes.  They are effectively an open cheque.  They are "negotiable" - that means they may be used as currency.  They are legal tender in Scotland but not in England.  Legal tender means that someone claiming that you owe them money must accept them in settlement.

Shops can accept or refuse any means of payment whether it's legal tender or not.  Some English shops accept Scottish notes although many do not.  All English banks will accept Sterling notes issued by banks in Scotland, Northern Ireland or the Channel Islands.

English £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes are promissory notes.  That basically means it's an IOU issued on behalf of HM Government.  They are generally accepted throughout the UK and Channel Islands.  Interestingly, the newest English £20 notes have a picture of a Scotsman on them.

The Shadow:  I don't know the expert you heard on Radio 5 Live, but if he has any Scottish money he doesn't want, he could give it to me.  In theory all Sterling is worthless - as are Dollars and Euros.  They only have a value because people have confidence in it.  If you went to the Bank of England with your bit of paper promising to pay you £5, the best they could offer you is another one - just cleaner.

  10. The notes in Scotland are different than the notes in England but as they are all stirling currency you can use them both.
