i am aware of the increasing popularity of discs brakes but i am looking to see if some top range rim brakes will do just as well. i have used other rim brakes before and they didn't seem to bother, disc brakes seem to need more effort to maintain. the rim brakes I'm looking at are single pivot v-brakes.

  1. For 90% of the people who ride recreationaly, V-brakes work great and require less maintenance than Disc Brakes.

There are advantages to Disc Brakes though like: increased "modulation" (or control of the the pressure on the brake), more stopping power while riding in mud or while it is raining, and they won't "Lock Up" as easily as V-Brakes.

If you are riding for performance, you may want to consider Discs but if you are riding around or using it on Mountain Bike Trails to have fun and not for bombing a run, V-Brakes will get you from start to stop no problem. It is what Mountain Bike riders have been using for years before Disc Brakes got to a point of being priced better so more people could get them without spedning too much.

  2. I've not seen single pivot v-brakes either. But in general, v-brakes work great as does dual pivot brakes for road bikes. Single pivot brakes aren't found on good bikes anymore because they are weak and difficult to keep adjusted.

EDIT: Please post a site where single pivot v-brakes are available. I could not find such a thing.

  3. That's a new one on me - I'll have to look up single pivot v-brakes. Can't say I ever saw them before.
