Are TV sets becoming obsolete?

The reason I ask is i see every1 asking questions on how to get free movies or episodes of shows on their PCs. Which is fine but I have a small laptop screen & a 36 in TV set. Is it a matter of preference or what? I use my PC for communications & business & my TV & stereo (DVD player too) for entertainment. Clarification please?

  1. In some ways, yes. Over the air broadcasts will no longer be transmitted in analog format and will require a separate digital converter box or a newer TV set with built in decoding.

However, that wasn't really your question. The Internet as a form of entertainment is more likely to phase out DVD/Blu-Ray as speeds increase and are capable of high quality videos over the Internet. The question should really be asking is "are Blockbuster, Netflix, and Hollywood Video becoming obsolete" in which they are, and why Netflix has implemented streaming videos. We are consumers and we want stuff NOW!

My reason to believe that TV broadcasting will not become obsolete is for shows like "The Office", "24", "American Idol" and other shows that people prefer to watch live than a recording after it has been shown. With the advent of TiVo, the way advertisements are displayed may change from our standard commercials to actual product placement inside of episodes. The future will tell.
