  1. Hong Kong - yes.

Taiwan - no (except for China who thinks yes).

  2. Taiwan- No

    Hong Kong-Yes

  3. Honk Kong is but not Taiwan, not to the Taiwanese, they are not.

  4. Hong Kong was formerlly a colony of England. It was given back to China in 1997, and will maintain its own small internal government until 2047.

Tiawan was once a small island province of China. After the communist revolution, many businessmen, intellectuals, and other educated people fled there and declared themselves to be an independant nation. China has never recognized this, and still lists Tiawan as part of its territory.

  5. Hong Kong is considered part of China except for certain trade issues.   According to the US government, Taiwan  is not recognized, but is considered seperate by the military and trade.  We have no official representation with that country.

Edit:  Janice, Taiwan never declared itself an independent nation.   It states that it's the official government of CHina.   It is only recently thinking of declaring itself an independent nation.
