  1. both

  2. geographical speaking both are making part of the two continets .But economical Russia is on its own , but Turkey is close to Europe and in future will make part from U.E

  3. They are basically considered to be in europe because more than 3/4 of the turkish land is in europe while russia can be seen as an off-shoot of the european continent

  4. They are both in both.

Turkey is mostly physically in Asia, as is Russia.

Russia's political and cultural ties have been more European-focused than Asian.

Turkey has, I think, a more "balanced" (closer to a 50-50 outlook of Asian and European focus) when it comes to political and a little less European with culture.

  5. Turkey is in Europe.

Russia, west of the Eurals is in Europe.  East of that, Asia.

  6. I would say both.

Turkey is mostly in Europe, in the westward direction a fair portion of it is on the European continent.  In the northern/southern direction, however, Armenia and Azerbaijan are generally considered Asia/Middle East (but Turkey is South of it).  Generally, Georgia is as far south as you can go and still be considered Europe.

As for Russia, it is Asian... although some parts of it extend into Europe.  The only reason why anyone would argue that Russia is European IS SOLELY because Russians are White.  West of the Ural mountain range, it is on the European continent.

  7. The part of Russia west of the Ural Mountain ranges is considered to be a part of Europe and the part to the East is considered to be in Asia.

The newly independent former USSR Republics, namely Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan and Turkey are assumed to be part of Asia. However these countries are trying for membership of the EU.

In fact half of Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) was traditionally considered to be in Asia and the other half in Europe.Apparently they also have a bridge there that connects Asia to Europe.

  8. They're really considered both. I know in particular that

Russia's landmass lies mostly on the Asian side, but a greater population lies in the European side which is why so many people associate it more with Europe.

  9. Good Question.  Both lie on the outskirts of the physical boundaries of Europe.  So, it is exactly the question I asked mysdelf when I saw both had football teams playing in the Euro cup.

Websters New Geographical Dictionary defines the boundaries of Europe as follows

To the East, the Ural Mts.  This would include some but not all of Russia.  It would include Moscow certainly.

To the South, the border is defined along bodies of water -- the Mediteranian, The Black Sea, and the Caspian.  The landbridge North of the Caucasious Mountains are considered Europe.

By this definition, the bulk of Turkey is excluded.  However, Istanbul lies north of the Bosphorus Strait.  Therefore, the City of Istanbul (at least the western half of it) is located technically in Europe.

Rather than their Geography, it is the history of these two nations and their principle cities that links them inexplicably with Europe.

A thousand (or-so) years ago Constantinople was the largest and most important city in Europe and the center of Christianity.  Historically some things have happened to weaken the city's role in the West, however, Turkey has maintained an important role in European/Western politics still today.  I think someone else said about 50/50, and I'd agree with that.

Russia is quite the opposite.  Russia didn't adopt Christianity until 988, and even then remained culturally apart from western Europe, as well as fairly remote geographicall too.  It wasn't until the 18th Century that western culture really began to infiltrate Russia.

  10. There is a line on most maps that will divide where Asia starts and Europe ends. I know for sure that Russia lies within both Asia and Europe. = ]]]
