I am a U.S citizen who will be attending school in Canada for 8 months starting in September. As a student, am I eligible for Canada's health benefits? If not, what is the best way to make sure I'm covered while studying? Do I need travel insurance?

  1. Quick and easy access to ongoing medical care is difficult for temporary visitors who are not members of each province’s government run health care plans.

No Canadian health care provider accepts U.S. domestic health insurance.  Visitors who seek any medical attention in Canada should be prepared to pay in cash in full at the time the service is rendered.  Traveler’s medical insurance is highly recommended even for visits to Canada.

  2. In addition to Tonalc's info, you could ask the school you will be attending if they have a student insurance plan.

  3. You would have to buy health insurance through the school. Health insurance for the year at McGill U in Montreal is $639.

  5. No.  You will have to buy health insurance.  I am not sure about the travel insurance, is health insurance a part of travel insurance?  That might be the cheaper way to go.

  6. Contact the Student Services office at your school in Canada. They will have a medical insurance plan for International students.
