Question:

Are Wal-Mart's Great Value Fat Free Refried Beans Vegetarian?

So there's a lot of confusion associated with canned refried beans. The others I saw at the store all included lard in the ingredients list, the ones I bought do not. I have been warned about the statement "prepared dry beans" in the ingredients list. However, the other great value brand said "with lard" on the label. I contacted the store but no one knows the answer, and when I called the 1800 number it was just a constant recorded loop. So, can anyone tell me if they are vegetarian, or help me find a way to figure this out. Thanks!

  1. refried beans are vegetarian if they dont contain lard....read your labels!!

come to think of it, im pretty sure that kroger/jayc sells a Vegetarian brand of refried beans, that says vegetarian beans right on the front

  2. The only ingredients are beans, water, salt and onion powder.

  3. If it says "Fat Free" there can't be any lard in it, but there could be other animal ingredients. I don't buy canned refried beans I just make my own.

4 cups cooked pinto, kidney, or black beans

    1 onion chopped

    1 clove garlic chopped.

Coat a pan with 1 table spoon peanut oil. Fry the onion and garlic till tender. Add the beans and simmer for a few minutes. Grind to a paste in your food processor.

  4. no there not....but they are gluten free

  5. Probably not.  Most companies would have "vegetarian refried beans" on the label if they were animal free.
