  1. We ARE NOT now in a major recession.  We may be moving in that way.  Things could really get bad.  We are balanced on a tight rope, and we could fall off very quickly.  If that happens, you will not have to ask.  You will KNOW it.

  2. It all depends on how you look at things.

    By government definition - no. We would need 2 back to back quarters of "negative growth" (That's an Oxymoron).

    "According to one widespread definition, a recession occurs when real growth is negative for two or more successive quarters of a year. However, there are differing definitions: In the United States, the National Bureau of Economic Research's (NBER) Business Cycle Dating Committee ultimately decides whether the economy has fallen into a recession. The NBER defines a recession as "a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production and wholesale-retail sale"

    Now for the reality.

    To me A 50%+ drop in major stocks is a serious problem.

    Airlines = in depression

    Housing credit & mortgage foreclosures = in depression

    home builders = in depression

    stock market = bear market

    banks = in depression

    stock brokerages = in depression

    bond insurers = in depression

    mortgage insurers = in depression

    consumers = strapped

    gas/ oil = record high's - up 100% in 12 months

    food (gains) = up 100-300%+ in 12-36 months

    no, everything is fine.
