Question:

Are Wilson's good clubs?

I want to get into golf and I went to this golf store and asked for a beginner set. The salesman pointed me towards a set of Wilson clubs. I obviously didn't want to go Callaway clubs cause that would be stupid. Not to mention expensive. It was a beginner set in a box with everything. It costs $415. What is the next step up in brand?

  1. if you are a beginner you might as well buy a cheaper brand of club.  You will not see a dramatic difference in your game by buying a name brand club.  If you stink, would you rather stink with a cheaper club or with a name brand.  Overtime when your game improves, so will your clubs.

  2. it depends what series of wilson clubs you get.  some of their models... really bad for anything but a beginner.  The one real great model Wilson does have is the Deep Red Series.  I know a lot of people who prefer the Deep Reds to ANY OTHER BRAND for feel, distance, accuracy and durability.  I am also a great fan of the Deep Reds but I find that their irons are a lot better than other clubs such as the woods.

  3. Wilson clubs are pretty close to the bottom of the barrel, which isn't to say that they're not good starter clubs.  But, as you find out over time how to improve your swing and game, you will end up replacing them with better clubs, so it could be cheaper in the long run, unless you're going to have a growth spurt, to get fitted for clubs and spend a little more for higher quality and be done with it.  Clubs in a box are not measured to your height, size and swing style and probably won't be a very good fit for you.  You can get a good set of clubs (like Adams' Golf) for under $1000.

  4. Ask Padraig Harrington (2007 Open Winner) and D.J. Trahan (2008 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic Winner). They play Wilson Clubs. They should know!!!

  5. The only way to have a nice set of clubs to have them fitted to you and your swing. Being fitted is the key. I will post a link where you can find a certified fitter. Its not cheap, but the best way to go.  Certified fitter and builders not only sell clubs the sell the fit first and foremost.  http://www.proclubmakers.org/vendor.php?...

  6. Callaway X20's is my personal recommendation

  7. Wilson = bad.

Wilson is probably the golf equivalent to the mcdonald's dollar menu.

  8. Wilson was once one of the top clubs available, but they have changed their focus to selling entry level, cheap clubs through  mass marketers.  They still make some fine clubs in the Deep Red Series.  Wilson Staff forged blades of the 60's and 70's were some of the best clubs ever made.  Some better players still use them, but you have to hit the ball spot on to use them.  Miss hit shots get terrible results, sting your hands, and make you yell "Oh, Sh*t". Good shots rocket off the club, and feel smooth and solid.

  9. No, go to nike, callaway, or taylormade.

  10. Wilson isn't the top and it isn't the bottom of the line.  Wilson's would be fine for a beginner who is just starting out.  You will probley keep the irons in the bag for a couple years, usually the clubs replaced first are the driver and the woods.  Wilson is a name-brand and not store brand which is a plus.  There are other brands like Golden Bear and Tommy Armour.
