  1. Generally young adult books are considered reading level grade 7 to grade 12.

  2. There's basically two types of YA.

There's the 7-13 crowd. (ex. Harry Potter, Artemeis Fowl, Bartemeus, American Girl, the Princess Diaries, Angus, thongs, and full frontal snogging, Uglies, exc.)

Then there's the 13-20 crowd.  (ex.Enders Game, The Supernaturalist, The Midnighters, A great and terrible beauty, The Wandering)

Generally the way to differenciate is what gender the main character is. This is not always applicable, mind you, but the 7-13 crowd usually consists of male characters. The 13-20 crowd has mostly girls.

  3. no seven is way to young for some young adult books.  Usually 12-18

  4. It depends about the maturity and intelligence level of the kids, but usually it is 12-18.  There are some books that obviously cater to the younger half, and some that obviously cater to the older half.  All in all, it depends on the kid.  I read Ender's game at age 11.

  5. I would actually say over 12. Checked this out on wikipedia:

Young-adult fiction (often abbreviated as YA fiction, or simply YA) is fiction written for, published for, or marketed to adolescents, roughly ages 12 to 18.

You can check the link for more info, if you want.

And even though I'm not a young adult, there are many YA authors I like (just got a Darren Shan book - Book 6 of the Demonata series).
