I've heard from various people and I heard the end of a snipet on NPR about how airfares are supposedly going up for tickets booked after September 2nd. Does anyone know if this is really true?

  1. I am continually amazed at the amount of bad information posted on this website. Dan has the only correct answer so far.

    Is it possible that fares will go up on September 2? Yes. It's equally possible that they'll go up tomorrow. No one knows. Airlines are losing horrific amounts of money and are raising fares whenever they can. Many airlines have announced that they will reduce flights later this year, which will probably have the effect of causing  fares to go up. However, it won't all happen on September 2.

    Among the other nonsense that you'll commonly hear from people is:

    Tickets are cheaper if you buy them on Tuesday or Wednesday. Complete rubbish. Domestic fares are often cheaper if you travel on Tuesday or Wednesday - not if you buy them on Tuesday or Wednesday.

    Airlines change their fares at midnight, so you can sometimes get them cheaper if you wait until then. Also total rubbish. Air fares can change at any time without notice. I have seen fares for a single flight change multiple times in a single day.

  2. Yes, this is true.

    They are also coming down on Sept. 3, airfares are usually cheapest on Wednesday.

  3. Yes. Some airfares WILL go up on September second.

    Of course, some will also go up on August 31, September 1, September 3, or any other day you pick.

    And, probably, some will go down as well.

  4. Air fares can go up at any time with no notice at all. The only way to guarantee your fare is to buy your ticket. When you have it, you will not be charged any more, regardless.

    Regards,

    Dan

  5. Airfares will go up for seasonal travel ie T'giving and Christmas. There maybe a few domestic markets that may decrease but no drastic increases. Just around the holidays I would buy those tickets now if you feel that they are resonable.

    The shoulder season begins around Sep1 and winter season Nov 1

    The airlines have 4 different fare seasons 2 shoulder 1 summer and 1 winter

    winter=nov-feb

    summer jun= aug
