  1. I would never check a pet!  You know what your luggage comes out looking like after being in the plane.  There are so many bad stories about pets dying or even getting lost.  It's not worth it if you love your pet.

  2. Very much so. They are pressurized and heated the same as the passenger cabin. I should qualify my answer. That's the way it is with US carriers. And it is reasonably close to the same as the passenger cabin.

You should check with your vet before doing any flying, though. If your pet has an upper respiratory infection (cold, or allergies) the flight may be very painful for them. They can't equalize their ears like we can. Also, in an emergency there is no supplemental oxygen for your pet.

  3. The airlines carry thousands of pets on a daily basis, mostly without incident. I have been surprised many times when opening a cargo door and being barked at. Some animals travel better than others. It depends on their individual personality, just like humans.

The cargo compartments are basically the same temperature as the passenger cabin and are pressurized as well.

If your pet is high-strung, I suggest that you get a tranquilizer from your vet.  Just before giving your pet to the airline, walk your dog so that he can relieve himself. You will not be able to see your pet until your final destination.
